Every now and then I realize that I have quite a few random tricks up my sleeve that are worth sharing. This, my love, is one of those tricks. As a busy chick, I don’t have time to reapply lipstick (and liner and gloss if we are being specific here) like 5 or 6 times throughout the day.
After much trial and error, I have a little recipe for something that I like to call Bulletproof Lipstick.
Step 1: Hydrate
I always start with a quick swipe of good old chap stick. I don’t slather it on, but a tiny dab keeps the lips hydrated which is so important! This will prevent lipstick from getting cakey and dry.
Step 2: The Base
Liquid lipstick is like glue. I don’t like the way it feels on and hate the way it looks after just 20 minutes of wear. Lips look crusty and dry with it on its own. Having said that, I love the way it works as a primer for lipstick. I choose a nude shade every time because I layer other colors on top. I love this one by Tarte and this one by Anastasia.
Step 3: Lipstick
Add whatever shade of lipstick you want. This step is optional if you like your base color and are planning on adding a gloss. I like a lipstick with a teeny amount of shimmer. Dimension and light reflection makes lips look pouty and full, a little shimmer does this. This rose gold lipstick is kind of sheer and adds the perfect sheen.
Step 4: Line
Lining the lips is a step a lot of people skip but shouldn’t. A little definition keeps your lipstick looking neat and clean. If you hate the look of liner, simply find a shade that’s an exact match to your lipstick. I prefer a shade or two darker than the lipstick (see above) because it adds dimension, making lips look fuller and not as flat (think contouring for the lips). The trick to lip liner is blending it in toward the center a little. It shouldn’t look like a harsh line. Lip liner will save your look if you plan on topping it off with a gloss because it prevents feathering. I don’t spend a ton of money on liner. I love this one by NYX, this one by Revlon and this one by Wet n Wild.
Step 5: Gloss (Optional)
Contrary to popular belief, you can wear lip gloss and have it last. You have to have the proper base for it to stick to. I’m obsessed with this nude gloss by Lorac.
