Paint is the fastest (and cheapest) way to make a big change when it comes to the home. If you’ve ever had to choose paint colors for a room then you know how daunting it is. Like how many off-white shades are there?! Every color has different undertones and can potentially compliment or clash with the floors, lighting, carpet, hardware… A few weeks ago, I found myself at Sherwin Williams staring at an entire wall of paint swatches having a serious Devil Wears Prada moment.
I had to come up with a color scheme that kept the flow of the open concept areas as well as the bedrooms -without being too boring. Our painter told us to head to Sherwin Williams and pick out some paint colors. I knew that I wanted a light and airy feel for the main living space and cozier shades for the bedrooms and bathrooms.
Entryway, living room, kitchen, master bedroom & dining room
These are all the same color because of the open floor plan. The shade is a very light warm greige called “Egret White”. I love the way it looks against a stark white trim. The color transforms beautifully as the light in each room changes from day to evening.
Family room & master bath
These are both painted “Alabaster”. This shade was names Sherwin Williams Color Of The Year in 2016. It appears as an off white on the paint chip, but still gives a whisper of contrast against white trim. It would look gorgeous with darker trim and molding as well. This shade happens to be a favorite of Chip & Joanna Gaines of Fixer Upper, probably because of its versatility.
Hallway and mudroom
We decided on “Agreeable Gray” which is a light neutral grey. I like the way it gently contrasts with the “Egret White” in the adjacent room.
Main bathroom
I chose “Poised Taupe” for the main bathroom because its cozy. Again, this is a Sherwin Williams Color Of The Year (2017). It looks SO similar to the master bedroom color in our previous home (Driftscape Tan by Benjamin Moore) and I was obsessed with the color. In morning light, it looks like a smoky purple but at night it looks tan. Love love love.
Dante’s room
Our youngest son Dante’s room is painted “Sea Salt”. The color is a very light silvery turquoise. His furniture is grey, so I think it compliments nicely. This shade would be beautiful in a nursery or bathroom.
Max’s room
We bought mas a really cool bed for his 5th birthday last year that looks like a tree fort. I wanted a color a bit closer to a dark green but still had the soft muted vibe. We ended up selecting “Mineral Deposit” which looks like a darker version of Dante’s room. His furniture is a light weathered wood, so it should balance out the deeper shade. His room gets the most natural light out of all the bedrooms, so the color doesn’t appear gloomy.

Can Sea Salt ever be put in a living room? I usually see it for bathrooms or bedrooms. I have a big living room with 2 story wall height. I’m scared any color I put in the room will be overwhelming. There is just so much wall
Mindy@FindingSilverLinings says
It’s a beautiful color but it’s definitely a color not a neutral I wouldn’t say it’s overpowering. I’d test it out on a spot first to see how you like it.

The room is north facing. I think I need to go warmer with the paint color. This is so hard. Thanks for your feedback!
Mindy@FindingSilverLinings says
Egret white by Sherwin Williams is stunning in our north facing room. I am so happy with it.

what color trim paint did you use throughout the house?
Mindy@FindingSilverLinings says
Super white or decorators white
Catherine Loughran says
Just wondered which kind of Sherwin-Williams paint did you use (Super paint,Emerald,Harmony etc). Plus what sheen did you go with
Mindy@FindingSilverLinings says
Good question. I am not sure of the type. As for the finish, in the kitchen and bathrooms I used semigloss and satin for all of the other rooms.

This has been so helpful, thank you! What do you think about using Egret white with Alabaster trim? Do you think itll look dingy?
Mindy@FindingSilverLinings says
Alabaster is a bit yellow/peach based and Egret white is grey toned. I’d stick with a pure white trim to keep it looking crisp.

We have a log home but I would like some color other than white on the walls that i can paint. It’s our first home and I have been loving the sea salt color but I only see it with white trim. Do you think it would look good with darker wood or would it make it not pop as well?
Mindy@FindingSilverLinings says
I think it would work with dark trim.

I really like your paint selections. We are painting our new home next week. I’m debating between Egret White and Repose Gray for our “all over color” in our open concept lake home. (Our kitchen cabs are a gray/green, trim is med/dark oak, floor is medium gray with green undertones that looks nice with the oak.) We want cozy but also open and airy. lol Have a recommendation? Had picked Sea Salt for the bathroom so was glad to see that on your list!
Thank you.

Hi Katie! Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to leave a comment. I have Egret White in the main areas of our open floor plan and absolutely love it!
