Lipstick. Just about everyone that’s ever worn makeup can agree that lipstick is a staple. Some lucky girls can look gorgeous with just a swipe of it and off they go to face the day. I don’t want to age myself here, but since I first started wearing lipstick, it’s come a very long way. There was no such color as nude lipstick, so I used to dab a bit of concealer over my lipstick to mix up my own creation. Now, the selection is almost too much to decide on just one! So many colors and so many formulas to choose from. Here are my favorite colors and formulas to creating the perfect pout.
Let’s talk nudes. No not Kim Kardashian’s bleeped out nekkid selfies, I’m talking barely there lip color. The ultimate compliment to a smokey eye. Not all nude lipsticks are created equal. Depending on your skin tone, some nude colors can wash you out, look grey, or not even look nude at all. I have a light-medium skin color (except in the summer, I’m a bit more tan). I’ve had lots of trial and error finding the perfect nude lipsticks. (image source)
Anastasia liquid lipstick in Pure Hollywood has kind of a cult following. It’s a pale pinky nude that seems to work on most skin-tones. When I put it on all by itself, it’s good. The real magic with this lipstick happens when I line it. The look completely transforms depending on the color lipliner. I am loving it paired with MAC Soar for a pinky- mauve lip. If I want it to look more nude, I line it with Rimmel East End Snob. The liquid lipstick formula is not like others I’ve tried which can be drying, I add a dab of clear gloss to the center of my lips and it stays put from 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM. Clearly my picture is not as glamorous as the above one hahah! #teamiPhone
Another go-to for my every day makeup is L’Oreal Color Riche in Fairest Nude. It’s a drugstore duplicate of MAC Honey Love and is available just about everywhere that sells makeup. I’ve blogged about this color many times. I’ve been using it for years. It’s a pink/peach/nude and it is gorgeous. Like the Anastasia, the color can transform depending on how you line it. The formula is creamy but never leaves that weird ring around the mouth like some hydrating lipsticks can sometimes. The color is flat (not shimmery) but not matte. I’ve seen it look gorgeous on dark skin and light skin. If you’re new to nudes, this is an inexpensive, no-fail option. Click here to snag yours.
The NYX simply nude cream (crayon) in Disrobed has been a constant in my makeup bag for about two years. It is a pale pinky nude. I discovered it when I saw @Iluvsarahii rocking it on Instagram and needed it. NYX is super inexpensive and super high quality. All by itself, this crayon appears too pale on my lips, but I use it almost as a lip highlighter. I apply it to the middle of my lips and it instantly makes them look fuller. Until this year, I’ve never experimented with red lipstick. I’ve seen it go so wrong on people that it turned me off. When done correctly, it’s feminine, powerful and confident. I’ve always loved the classic look when paired with a simple black winged liner ala Marilyn, but never had the guts to go for it. In fact, the first red I tried was too orangey and made my teeth look yellowish. I quit red for months. I need to just find the right shade and I was all set. I’m fully on board with a red kisser now! Here are my favorite reds.
I got this Marc Jacobs lipstick as a sample from Sephora and need the full size ASAP. The color is Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. The formula is soooo smooth. The color is a blue based darker red. Not too dark, just right. I lined my lips with Rimmel Exaggerate liner in Rich. *Pro tip- apply a little concealer just along the outside of your lips to prevent to the color from feathering. NYX does it again. This inexpensive brand delivers the perfect red, no really. The name of this shade is Perfect Red. It’s also a blue base red. It’s more of a true red and is rumored to be a duplicate of MAC’s cult classic Ruby Woo. When you use a blue based red, it makes your teeth look really white, a nice bonus. Here’s me wearing a student-made Santa hat rocking my holiday lip in Perfect Red 🙂 Click here to get yours for $5.99.
