You need this in your life.
You guys, this is the best idea I’ve come across in a while. Red Velvet NYC liked one of my photos on Instagram, so me being the curious cat that I am, I clicked the link in their profile and instantly fell in love. Usually brands ask me to review their products and I decide if it’s a good fit for the blog (basically is the product worth bringing to your attention or not). I turn down lots of brands because the integrity of this blog is my top priority, so if a product makes it into this screen, it’s because I love it and want to share with you. This review is different because I contacted them to ask permission to gush about what they are doing. They agreed and sent me a kit to test out. I wasn’t paid for this post. The product is just dope and you and all of your friends need to know about it.
What is it? You choose one of their mouth-watering desserts and they ship you the highest quality ingredients all pre-measured to create your dessert in your own kitchen. Think made from scratch without having to measure anything or hunt for a recipe. Oh and did I mention the presentation is ridiculously pretty?
The box arrived to my house like this. Red chevron? Check.
And when I opened the box, the boutique quality didn’t stop. I felt like I was unwrapping a gift.
There was a handwritten note from the owner which was such a nice touch.
I told them to surprise me with the dessert, so of course I was jumping up and down in my kitchen to see that they sent me the baking kit to make 24 Nutella frosted cupcakes.
The ingredients were clearly (and beautifully) labeled. I mean, they even sent butter and buttermilk.
The recipe directions were very straight-forward and offered helpful tips. Seriously fool-proof.
I made the cupcakes and while those cooled, I whipped up the frosting. You guys, THIS FROSTING. It’s like the lightest fluffiest Nutella flavor with a sea salt finish. In other words, flipping phenomenal.
I’m not a fan of fussy-looking frosting on desserts, so when I saw the piping bag, I thought I’d make the effort and try a swirly twirly top, then said nah. I want a ton of this frosting on every cupcake. So I made bombs.
Here’s how to frost a cupcake like a (non-fussy) pro.
Fill up a disposable bag (a large zip lock would work too). Snip off a corner. Place the tip of the bag in the center of the cupcake.
Then squeeze hard. It poufs up like this.
I topped mine with a toasted hazelnut (they came in the baking kit too).
Um, can we talk about how pretty these baking cups are?! They’re cardboard, non-stick and I didn’t even need a muffin pan. I just lined them up like soldiers on a flat baking sheet.
Red Velvet NYC has kits labeled easy, intermediate or advanced. This is a great way to try making a more ambitious recipe (since everything is measured out and labeled, recipes have photos and tips). There are a ton of recipes to choose from such as brioche read pudding, panna cotta, dinner party sets and birthday sets. Some kits come with baking utensils, ramekins, spatulas, cookie cutters, etc. The pricing is also affordable (the kit I tested costs $28 which is a little over a buck per cupcake). This is an amazing gift for someone that loves to bake (or eat). Check out their goodies here. First time orders enjoy 15% off.
