I’m writing this post to hopefully prevent this from happening to anyone else’s fur baby. We had a rough night here at casa FSL Sunday night.
6:00 PM on Sunday, we gave Rocco a dose of K9 Advantix to prevent him from fleas, ticks, etc. We bought the kind for small dogs. When the 3 of us hopped into bed, Rocco was moving around like crazy. He couldn’t sit still, rolling all over. Finally, he calmed down as Mr. FSL rubbed his back.
2:00 AM Monday morning, Rocco is squirming all over the place. my husband and I get up and try to figure out what’s wrong. We were online searching K9 Andvantix when hundreds upon hundreds of horrible things were coming up as search results. People’s pets were having bad reactions to this and some were dying. DYING! I instantly become frantic and start sobbing. We started scrubbing his back (where the medicine was applied). We tried to calm him down and he wouldn’t.
3:45 AM, we gave him a bath using dish soap to sop up the oils from the Advantix application. After googling extensively, I figured that he was having an allergic reaction. I gave Rocco a small dose of Benedryl. This put my mind at ease and I laid back down and fell asleep while Mr. FSL and my fur baby laid in the guest bed. Rocco was all over the place still.
5:45 AM Rocco is jumping and pawing to get on my bed with me. He wanted his mom. This though makes me so sad still. He must have been so scared. I felt so helpless. We decided he needs to go to the pet emergency room. The doctor determined that there was nothing they could do but try to wash it off of his skin. So he got another bath there. The Benedryl will not help him but it will put him to sleep (at this point he was awake for over 24 hours). We were told to put vitamin E on his back about 3 times throughout the day.
8:30 AM Rocco comes home. Neither my husband or me really sleeping, we scramble to work and my wonderful father-in-law puppysat all day.
After bath #3
When he finally came home
Napping at last
Even when I came home from work around 4:00 PM, he would only relax if I scratched him. He’s still twitchy. Poor baby.
Please learn from our bad experience. Don’t risk your dog’s life. I was never so afraid for Rocco. We are looking for a natural alternative.

Oh no! I hope your pup is feeling a little bit better. That must have been so scary for all of you. We are looking in to flea and tick meds right now. I will be taking your advice and skimming right past advantix. Thanks for the info.

Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry you had to go through this – and obviously that Rocco had to go through this. I can’t imagine how scary it had to be. We skipped the treatment this year so far because of my pregnancy, we weren’t 100 percent sold on the chemicals. Now, I’m glad we did. I heard there is a shot you can choose to use now that’s safer and simpler. It’s defiintely not worth all this scariness.
Mindy@FindingSilverLinings says
Ya super scary. My husband put it on Rocco I was too afraid to. I’ll have to look into the shot. Thanks Kim! Hope you’re feeling great 🙂

How horrible! Poor guy!!
We have used Frontline with Ike since he was little. It’s not natural but it’s the one both vets we have used have recommended and we haven’t had any problems with it!
Mindy@FindingSilverLinings says
I used to use Frontline but we figured this stuff was better for ticks. We live in a heavily wooded area and the ticks are really bad this year. He is finally feeling better, thanks 🙂

Oh my gosh- so sorry you guys had to go through this!
We live in CT and the ticks are horrible here. We used to use Frontline, but switched to the Advantix because Frontline wasn’t really doing a good job. We have a golden retriever and haven’t had issues with the Advantix, but now this makes me a little bit anxious to continue using it. I’d love to hear if you find anything more natural that works!
Mindy@FindingSilverLinings says
We live in CT also. I’m not sure what we are going to do about Rocco.

WOAH! I’m glad he’s doing better now! That’s so sad! I know when anything to our pups, I always feel so so helpless! They try so hard to tell us that everything isn’t okay — and sometimes it’s so hard to figure out what the problem is! Poor lil guy!
