I’d really like to hear back from you guys today. I’m curious to know something.
In college, one of my course instructors gave us an assignment to take a quiz. We were studying Carl Jung (a very influential and important Swiss psychiatrist). He explained that the results of this quiz would greatly affect how he would run the class. The quiz was filled with questions about the way we react to certain situations. There was no right or wrong answer, as long as we answered honestly. We all completed it.
The following class, every student received a small slip of paper with four letters on it.
He told us that we just took the Myers-Briggs personality test. Many businesses and large companies conduct this test to find the best potential job candidates for specific positions. My professor gave us an overview on the 4 categories and what each meant. It was the mother of all personality tests, unlike the ones I’ve taken in Seventeen Magazine when I was in high school.
I read my personality profile (see that here and here). These links also provide links to all 16 profile types -so you can see yours after. It listed jobs that would be a good fit for me, how to interact better with other people, and even tells how much of the world’s population thinks like me 🙂
I became very interested and did a bit more research on my personality profile and read things like :
- 3rd most frequent among education majors in college.
- In national sample “Leisure Activities,” overrepresented in “Writing,” “Appreciating art,” “Playing musical instrument,” “Listening to music,” “Reading”
- Underrepresented in “Watching TV for leisure” and “Watching TV 3 or more hours per day.”
- Academic subjects preferred: art, English, music.
- In national sample, lowest of all types in liking work environments where “Everything is done by the book”
- 1 of 3 highest types in liking “Independence & achievement,” “Teamwork,” and “People from different backgrounds.”
- Most important feature on an ideal job: creativity and originality.

I am an ENFP through and through. Nevermind zodiac signs, this test is the real deal.

Guardian
We are lucky that Protectors make up as much as ten percent the population, because their primary interest is in the safety and security of those they care about – their family, their circle of friends, their students, their patients, their boss, their fellow-workers, or their employees. Protectors have an extraordinary sense of loyalty and responsibility in their makeup, and seem fulfilled in the degree they can shield others from the dirt and dangers of the world. Speculating and experimenting do not intrigue Protectors, who prefer to make do with time-honored and time-tested products and procedures rather than change to new. At work Protectors are seldom happy in situations where the rules are constantly changing, or where long-established ways of doing things are not respected. For their part, Protectors value tradition, both in the culture and in their family. Protectors believe deeply in the stability of social ranking conferred by birth, titles, offices, and credentials. And they cherish family history and enjoy caring for family property, from houses to heirlooms.
Wanting to be of service to others, Protectors find great satisfaction in assisting the downtrodden, and can deal with disability and neediness in others better than any other type. They are not as outgoing and talkative as the Provider Guardians [ESFJs], and their shyness is often misjudged as stiffness, even coldness, when in truth Protectors are warm-hearted and sympathetic, giving happily of themselves to those in need.
Their reserve ought really to be seen as an expression of their sincerity and seriousness of purpose. The most diligent of all the types, Protectors are willing to work long, hard hours quietly doing all the thankless jobs that others manage to avoid. Protectors are quite happy working alone; in fact, in positions of authority they may try to do everything themselves rather than direct others to get the job done. Thoroughness and frugality are also virtues for them. When Protectors undertake a task, they will complete it if humanly possible. They also know better than any other type the value of a dollar, and they abhor the squandering or misuse of money. To save, to put something aside against an unpredictable future, to prepare for emergencies-these are actions near and dear to the Protector’s heart. For all these reasons, Protectors are frequently overworked, just as they are frequently misunderstood and undervalued. Their contributions, and also their economies, are often taken for granted, and they rarely get the gratitude they deserve.
I would have to say most of this sounds like me other than the saving money part, I can’t save money to save my life, I am a shop-a-holic.

Leila- I think the reason it wasn’t 100% you is because the strength of each preference is 50% or below. That’s good. It means you’re well rounded.

I took this test long ago. I took it twice, with a decade between, and scored the same way each time. INFP. I have found the descriptions to be accurate. Someone once told me that mine is a rare letter combination.
Mindy@FindingSilverLinings says
My professor said that mine was a rare combination also. We are really similar, except I am a loud mouth extrovert, lol!

You got me thinking back to mine too. I thought it was incorrect, but now that I’m older I can understand the results better. I am an ENTJ, i.e. the Field Marshall. But I think I can be introverted at times. It’s funny that all my aptitude tests and personality tests say that I should be an engineer.
Mindy@FindingSilverLinings says
You are a lucky peach 😉
Elin @andserenitytoo says
Apparantly I’m INFP – the idealist 😉 Fits me VERY well I have to say – got rather lost just now in reading the different traits and such… So interesting!!

I’m an ESFJ. I was surprised that it said I was extroverted. Which I guess I am because I THINK I can be shy but if I’m comfortable around you/large group I’m probably the loudest one lol.

I’m very surprised about the jobs listed as well. Very up front type of jobs and dealing/talking with people. I’mnot a morning person and I can be very awkward and nervous so I’m surprised it gave me: Management, Public Administration, Hotel & Restaurant Manager, Sales Specialits, Nursing, Education, Social Work.
Wow wee.

I am an ENFP like you Mindy. As a psychologist I’ve taken this twice and studied it a lot and, while all the combinations are interesting, there’s nothing like we ENFP’s!
