No really. Somebody. Please! It’s snowed & iced for weeks here in New England. My husband and I came home from work to see our roof that once looked like this:
Now looks like this:
This morning:
[
and like this down the entire length of our house.:
This morning:
Our roof literally caved in. Our roof has an attached overhang that covers our back deck which spans the length of our house. It collapsed from the ice and snow while we were off at work. The overhang ripped right off leaving this:
This morning:
This eventful night consisted of my husband and father in law with shovels and the snowblower buzzing on the back deck.
Here’s what we did in our first house crisis situation.
Step 1. Freaked out for about 3 minutes.
Step 2. Calmed down. Nobody was hurt. The house is livable.
Step 3. Called our homeowner’s insurance.
Step 4. Got as much snow and glacier ice off of the deck to tried to take some weight off (for those of you lucky enough to live in warmer climates, snow and ice are extremely heavy)
Step 5. Carry on with life until our insurance comes to help us fix our roof.
Step 6. Thank God that we are okay and still have each other.
The night before, we were in our jaccuzzi on our back deck for about an hour. We could have been seriously hurt or killed. We are very grateful that it happened when it did. It can always be worse.
I on the other hand, did 3 loads of laundry, (snuck in a glass of sauvignon blanc to calm the nerves) dishes, and dinner (which I’ll post later) all with an 8 pound maltese up my coolie. He was so scared of the snow blower that he was literally under my feet all night! I swear I almost stepped on him like 5 times. I eventually landed in front of my laptop and Wee Dog trembling on my lap. Poor guy.

Oh no!!! that’s terrible, nbut like you said, at least everyone was okay and you have insurance to cover it!

Yup! That’s what insurance is for. It was kind of a mini blessing in disguise. I learned that as a team, my husband and I are fairly cool, calm, and collected under pressure.

I’m glad you had insurance and I hope everything gets fixed right away. We have a terrible amount of snow as well ahh.

Mindy@FindingSilverLinings says
The snow is wet so it’s really heavy. They have the snow blower doing the really heavy stuff. Thanks though.

Oh NO! I was reading that thinking…I have NO idea what I would do! I love how you listed exactly what you did to take care of the situation…including freaking out and the wine. When we have our own house and we fall into a crisis, I hope I can remember this and chuckle bc you dealt with it very well!
I still think I would be a mess lol. P.S. nice choice of wine 😉
Mindy@FindingSilverLinings says
This was our first real house related crisis. I learned that insurance is a must! I’ve found that most of our friends that own a home have had some freak accident happen to them within the first few months. I like to think of it as getting initiated into the homeowner’s club! And, I’d be lyin if I said I didn’t freak out or down a glass of vino :P.
