March is such a weird month in New England. On some days it will snow, and on others temps could peek into the high 60’s. Do you hang on to your sweaters or unpack the short sleeves? For me, this tricky weather means lightweight shirts and layers.
Something about the change of seasons makes me feel the strong need to buy new clothes. In light of the whole capsule wardrobe movement and the trend toward minimalism, I am trying to create outfits using a few pieces I already own while focusing my purchases on just a couple of items. Here are the three pieces on my “must buy” list.
Bell Sleeved Shirt
The black knee ripped pants from last year that I paired with a plaid shirt or sweater will work well with a bell sleeved shirt. 70’s inspired sleeves were all over NYFW and I love me some retro. How pretty is this outfit?! And super wearable. Plus I have some taupe ankle booties and a long necklace already to recreate this look. Similar shirt here. Similar pants here. Similar booties here.
Chambray Shirt
The chambray shirt has been a staple in everyone’s closet. If you don’t have one, just do yourself the favor and get one. The layering options are endless. The shirt looks great underneat a v-neck or peeking out under a fitted blazer. I love it tucked into dressier pants for an office look. Sincerely Jules knocks it out of the park yet again with this effortless but on point ensemble below. Ugh, I just love her. This look will allow you to sneak in some denim while pulling off the ddressed down profesh vibe. Similar shirt here. Similar shoes here. Similar pants here.
Athletic Graphic Tee
From the recent Tommy Hilfiger comeback to the Kardash-Jenner obsession with athleisure, it’s obvious that this sporty trend isn’t going anywhere for at least a little while. I’m not saying it’s a good idea to attempt sweats and clear heels to the office, but I am saying the trend is wearable is small bites. Case in point, the graphic tee. Tuck it into a skirt, knot it to make it a cute cropped number or rock it like the photo below. When skirt shopping, you might have a lot of questions. What type of hemline should you choose? What is your ideal skirt length. Before you make a purchase, you need to answer those questions. The problem is there is no single answer. Your ideal skirt length may depend on your height and the occasions on which you want to wear the skirt. For example, a maxi skirt may make your legs look shorter when you feel you are too tall, but it might not be practical for a night out dancing. In general, your best option is to purchase a skirt that can walk the line of being not too short but not too long and cross from casual to formal on a moment’s notice with a quick change of shoes or jewelry.
